Álvaro Sarmiento is a documentary filmmaker and founder of HDPERU, an Indigenous collective dedicated to producing films that defend the rights of native peoples and promote environmental justice in Peru. Throughout his career, Álvaro has received several awards and grants, including those from the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center, the MacDowell Colony, The Yaddo Corporation, the IBERMEDIA Co-production Fund, and the Carolina Foundation Residency. His debut feature, Green River: The Time of the Yakurunas (2017), premiered at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and MoMA Doc Fortnight. Mothers of the Land (2019), his second feature-length documentary, premiered at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. Veins of the Amazon (2021), his third feature-length documentary, premiered at the 64th DOK Leipzig. Álvaro studied Media, Communication Sciences and Film at the University of Lima in Peru, the Estacio de Sa University in Brazil, and completed a Master's degree in Film Directing at Ohio University in the United States.
